News > AAR’s ISAC Open to American Waterway Operators (AWO) Members

June 14, 2002

The Association of American Railroads (AAR), in coordination with the Department of Transportation (DOT), has created the Surface Transportation Information Sharing and Analysis Center (ISAC). The ISAC is a clearinghouse for information on threats, vulnerabilities, and solutions to physical and cyber infrastructure security. AAR established the ISAC before the September 11 attacks in response to a presidential directive on National Critical Infrastructure Protection, which called for the creation of private sector Information Sharing and Analysis Centers to protect critical infrastructure from attack. In light of the increased national focus on security, AAR has invited the participation of AWO member companies that want to receive threat alerts tailored to their individual company infrastructure.

The ISAC provides companies with a secure means of sharing security information, either anonymously or in an attributable manner, that may be of benefit to other members of the transportation industry. The ISAC is managed by a contractor with security and antiterrorism expertise.

Participants in the ISAC pay an annual membership fee of approximately $7500 and are immediately provided with analysis and round-the-clock incident response support. Members of the ISAC can also obtain computer network vulnerability assessments, on site incident response support, intrusion investigations and computer forensics analysis, remote monitoring of intrusion detection systems and firewalls, and analytical risk management and mitigation. AWO members interested in learning more about the ISAC should contact Jennifer Carpenter at (703) 841-9300 or jcarpenter@vesselalliance.com.

AWO will continue to work with AAR and other transportation trade associations to explore areas of common interest on security issues.
